In Ho Chi Minh City you can find all kinds of Vietnamese souvenirs -- woodcarvings, lacquerware, paintings, ceramics, and T-shirts -- as well as idiosyncratic items such as imitation GI cigarette lighters. You can also get well-made designer gear at a fraction of the price paid even in Bangkok's markets and some of the most up-to-date electronic hardware at a steal. Be sure to spend an hour or two at the old colonial Ben Thanh Market in the city center and the Ben Tay Market in Cholon, where you can sample the city going about its daily business and buy a wide variety of items.
